Tell us a little about yourself and your business.
I’m originally from Scotland but have been living and working internationally for most of the past 10 years. I’m currently the Vice President of Hospitality for multiple luxury developments in Belize. My role involves overseeing operations, creating strategic visions, and ensuring that each property under my leadership aligns with the highest standards of luxury and service. Our brand focuses on delivering exceptional guest experiences by fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within our teams.
What motivates you in your work and what do you find most fulfilling about being a business leader?
I’m motivated by achieving tangible results and by the dedication and hard work that goes into reaching those milestones. The success of any business hinges on the passion and commitment of its team, particularly those members who interact with clients daily. The most fulfilling part of my job is witnessing these team members embody the values of our brand, providing unparalleled service and creating memorable experiences for our guests. Seeing our associates grow, excel, and take pride in their roles drives me to keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible in hospitality.
How did you develop your leadership skills and how would you define your leadership style?
My leadership style has evolved through experience and learning to accept when mistakes or poor decisions have been made. A leader must not be rigidly attached to their ideas and must recognize when change is necessary. My approach involves working closely with each of our executives to understand where they excel and where they require development and support to reach their full potential and personal goals. It’s crucial to recognize that every individual is different, and motivation varies from person to person. By fostering open communication and providing personalized development plans, I aim to create a high-performing, motivated team.
Innovating is crucial in our very diverse industry. How do you stay ahead of trends and incorporate them into your global strategy?
Innovation comes in many forms, and one must be ready to find inspiration from unexpected sources. When exploring ways to improve our operations, I often draw inspiration from other industries facing similar challenges in different fields. While technology is a clear avenue for innovation, we must ensure it enhances rather than detracts from the guest experience. I emphasize to my team that technology should streamline administrative tasks to maximize the personalized, human interactions our clients expect and value.
What do you consider to be the key component(s) of effective business operational development?
The key components of effective business operational development in a luxury hotel brand include:
These elements collectively ensure a strong foundation for growth, differentiation, and enduring guest loyalty in the luxury hospitality market.
How do you approach identifying areas for improvement within a company's operations?
We are a results-driven, people-centric business that delivers exceptional guest experiences. Three key factors drive our decisions: business viability, associate satisfaction, and guest experience. First and foremost, we operate to provide returns to our stakeholders. Secondly, we continuously assess the motivation and satisfaction of our associates, understanding that a content and motivated workforce will naturally translate into excellent guest care. This holistic approach helps us maintain high satisfaction scores and repeat business, completing the cycle of success.
Where do you think the most promising investments should be focusing on and/or made on?
The most important investments are those that drive business growth. Sometimes, this could mean adding a new outlet or structure; more often, it involves investing in developing our team to ensure we remain at the forefront of our industry and continue to exceed client expectations. Additionally, investment is essential in areas that enhance our commitment to sustainability. We must align with global shifts towards sustainable practices, not just as a responsibility but also as a business advantage.
What is or are your biggest career achievement(s)?
The highlights of my career have emerged from the most challenging moments. These range from opening new resorts, rebuilding resorts after a Category 5 hurricane, and, of course, navigating a global pandemic.
What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned as a leader is that I do not have all the answers. If I attempt to make all the decisions alone, my business will be limited by my own capabilities. As a leader, my job is to find exceptional people and create an environment where they feel empowered to share their expertise. While I may need to make the final decision, it must be informed by diverse perspectives and insights.
How did you identify and seize opportunities for advancement in your career?
I proactively sought advice from those who had achieved the positions I aspired to reach. Mentorship and networking have been crucial in helping me identify opportunities and develop strategies to advance in my career.
Have you achieved everything you wanted in your career so far?
No, far from it. While I have achieved persoanl milestones, I believe there is always more to learn, more challenges to overcome, and more growth to achieve—both for myself and the organizations I lead.
How important is personal development to your success, and how do you approach it?
I was fortunate early in my career to work for individuals willing to invest time in me and share their knowledge. Following their example, I strive to nurture those who demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm, and a genuine concern for enhancing our clients' experiences. I believe in continuous learning, seeking out new ideas, and staying adaptable to change.
How do you prioritize tasks when everything feels like a priority?
I reflect on the core objectives of my role and determine which tasks will most significantly impact those objectives. This approach allows me to allocate my time and resources effectively, ensuring that the most critical aspects of our businesses receive the attention they need.
What was the hardest decision you have taken as a leader?
The hardest decisions are those necessary to protect a business but that impact associates through no fault of their own. Many leaders faced this during the COVID pandemic or in times of natural disasters. Balancing business continuity with compassion for our team members is always challenging but essential.
What steps do you take to measure your own performance?
To measure my performance, I set clear, measurable goals aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization. I regularly review these goals and assess my progress against key performance indicators, such as revenue growth, guest satisfaction scores, employee engagement, and operational efficiency. Feedback from peers, subordinates, and stakeholders is also crucial; I believe in fostering a culture of open communication where constructive feedback is encouraged. Self-reflection is another key component—regularly assessing my decision-making, leadership style, and adaptability helps me continuously improve.
What does success mean for you as a business leader?
Success, to me, is a combination of achieving strong business results, fostering a motivated and engaged team, and maintaining a positive, sustainable impact on the community and environment. It’s about creating an enduring legacy where the brand is known for excellence and innovation, the team is empowered and fulfilled, and the guests are loyal advocates for the experiences we create. Success is not just about hitting financial targets; it’s about making meaningful contributions to the lives of our employees, guests, and partners.
