What does ‘lesbian visibility’ mean to you, and why is it important?
Lesbian visibility to me means awareness for the lesbian community, being proud and not ashamed to be heard. Everyone deserves to feel heard no matter what they identify as.
How important have queer role models been to you and did you have any growing up, through your education and into your career?
I have always sought queer role models from a young age, whether they were or not. I've always admired those who were proud to be queer and had no shame in hiding it whether that was in the sporting world or the business world.
What are the key challenges LGBTQI women face today?
I think mainly stigma around what a 'queer' person should look like! There are so many false beliefs, stereotypical assumptions and because of this, it creates a lot of hate and finger pointing. It would be amazing if we could all live without fear or judgement, however we decide to present ourselves.
What can organisations do to support Lesbian Visibility Week?
Be proud and shout about their successes and things organisations are doing to actively help the community!
What would your advice be to other women who might be struggling to come to terms with their sexuality and how that might affect them in the workplace?
There's no rush in figuring out what it is that YOU need - find support where you can, whether it's with colleagues or friends etc and remember that you are there for a reason and if that's not appreciated, you're not the one missing out!
What’s the main message or tips you’d want to give to any queer women or allies reading this?
Don't hold back on being authentically you. I held back for so many years through fear of judgement - all it did was dampen who i was. Take your time creating yourself, throw everything into it, it'll be the most freeing, fun thing you ever do!
