Medium Sized Retail Business  – CEO 

Client Business

Food focused business in London specialising in healthy food and drink offer. 

Location: They operate in high footfall retail areas in central London.

The scope: Business has complex management structure and just secured private equity funding to further develop.

The Challenges: The business faced challenges with a diluted brand, unmotivated staff, poor customer service and disengaged senior management team. The founder of the business was also looking to move into new projects and wanted to have less involvement with the business.

Search requirements  

To re-establish the ‘brand’ and reinvigorate the company mission.  The client needed a CEO that could develop a long term strategy for the business to ensure growth and that would allow the team to focus on goals. Address poor staff moral and a ‘waste management’ culture as opposed to a ‘profit maximisation’ culture. The company had long harboured aspirations for national and international growth as many businesses who were formed at the same time had managed to achieve

COREcruitment sought candidates with exceptional leadership qualities and previous career experience of leading growth food businesses with a specific focus on marketing and team building.  We created a long list of 30 candidates of senior executives from multiple industries.  Candidates were measured against criteria which included entrepreneurial ability, conflict resolution, influencing skills and market knowledge. The long list of candidates was compiled from COREcruitment’s network of candidates, competitor businesses, targeted selection via industry referrals and a targeted advertising campaign utilising multiple marketing channels.

COREcruitment's Solution

At the shortlist stage candidates were evaluated on their past business achievements, personal motivations, affinity with the brand and their customer base. The eight shortlisted candidates prepared business plans and market analysis.  An external specialist, appointed by COREcruitment, evaluated the plans and provided impartial feedback to the client.  COREcruitment managed a four stage interview process including psychometric profiling and documentation of interview feedback and candidate ‘engagement’ levels throughout the process.

The final candidate selected came from an industry competitor who was seen as an innovator in their field. He had been instrumental in a successful business and although this would be his first opportunity ‘at the helm’ it was felt that his approach, enthusiasm and openness to guidance from a wider board would mean he would be challenged by the business for a longer period of time and would remain engaged in a business plan spanning five years.

The duration of the search was 6 weeks from assignment to offer stage
