To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, Krishnan interviews Julie Wade, Senior Director Of Marketing at Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe
What does IWD mean to you?
International Women's Day is important to celebrate all women and the work that we do in the workplace, in the home and in the community. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to make substantial impacts in all three areas. I became a leader in my company early in my career (one of very few female executives and definitely the youngest) and then stepped away for 10 years to have the most important job as a mom. During those years, I was able to work with multiple non-profits including schools, my church and organizations that help those with disabilities. Coming back to a career full-time in 2011, I entered another phase of life where I can give more time and attention to the company than I could have earlier in my life.
Why haven't we achieved equality, despite legislation in place regarding pay?
For me, I believe this has been because of the stop and start of my career. Had I not taken a 10-year hiatus, I could be further along and be earning more, but being home with my children was the right move for me and was more important than a pay check.
How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?
Leadership is all about being empathetic, decisive and forthright. When you mess up, own it. It's a trait very few have, and it makes people trust you, since they know you won't sacrifice others for your mistakes.
What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership and an inclusive workplace?
Let your employees take time for community involvement. Many companies give a day or two a year for community service, but that's mainly window-dressing. It takes time and effort over multiple weeks/months to make a lasting impact.
What advice will you give to your younger self?
Care less about what people think about you. Stick to what you know is right for yourself and your family in all situations.
