IWD 2025 - an interview with: Denisa Tohaneanu

Tell us a little about your career journey leading to where you are now.

I moved to the UK 10 years ago after working as a Financial Manager in Romania. Without local experience, I had to start from scratch, beginning as a receptionist. Within six months, I transitioned into finance, and later, I moved into reservations. Through perseverance and dedication, I progressed from a Reservations Supervisor to my current role as Head of Reservations & Revenue for one of the most iconic hospitality groups in the UK.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work for some of the most renowned restaurants in the UK, overseeing reservations and revenue strategies for more than 40 venues per group. It has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey, proving that with patience and hard work, nothing is impossible.

What does the International Women’s Day slogan “accelerate action” mean for you?

For me, "accelerate action" means breaking down barriers to ensure women have equal opportunities in leadership and mentorship, while uplifting future female professionals. It emphasises the urgency of not just discussing these issues but actively working to close the gender gap. This serves as a reminder that change doesn’t happen on its own; we must act today to create a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.

How important is it for women to lift each other up and what does that mean to you?

It is incredibly important for women to lift each other up, especially in leadership and hospitality, where collaboration and mentorship are key to success.

For me, it means creating opportunities for growth, supporting other women in their careers, and ensuring that leadership teams are diverse and inclusive. In the hospitality industry, where teamwork is essential, empowering one another leads to stronger, more dynamic workplaces that drive both business success and personal fulfilment.

True leadership isn’t just about personal achievements, it’s about bringing others along on the journey and fostering an environment where all women can thrive, lead, and inspire.

How important is diversity across senior leadership teams?

For me, it means having different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds at the table, which leads to stronger strategies, greater creativity, and a more inclusive work culture. In the hospitality industry, where guest experiences are at the heart of success, diverse leadership ensures we understand and cater to a wide range of customers, cultures, and markets.

A truly successful organization is one where leaders reflect the diversity of the people they serve, creating an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, background, or culture, can grow and contribute.

Senior leadership: 26%, C-suite: 19%, 1 in 4: Chief-level. These are the percentages and numbers of female leaders in our industry. What do these numbers represent to you?

These numbers highlight the significant gender gap that still exists in leadership within our industry.

For me, they represent progress but also a call to action; while more women are stepping into leadership roles, there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality. With only 26% of senior leadership and 19% in C-suite positions, it’s clear that women need more opportunities, mentorship, and support to break into executive roles.

This is why accelerating action is crucial. We must continue to challenge biases, create leadership pathways, and foster an inclusive culture where women can thrive at all levels, not just 1 in 4, but equally represented at the top.

As a successful leader, how do you think (business) leaders can accelerate action toward closing the gender gap and ensuring equal opportunities in the workplace?

Business leaders can close the gender gap by leading by example with diverse hiring and promoting women into leadership. Creating inclusive policies, like flexible work arrangements and parental leave, is essential. Establishing mentorship programs empowers women, while training on unconscious bias raises awareness. Setting clear goals and tracking progress helps motivate change, and fostering a culture of respect encourages open dialogue. These actions can create a more equitable workplace for everyone.

Can you share your top tips for entrepreneurial/managerial/leadership success?

My top tips for entrepreneurial and leadership success include leading by example in everything you do. It's crucial to remain humble and treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position. Listen actively to your team and make yourself available for them; try to understand their perspectives and challenges. However, it’s also important to be strong when making decisions and to stand by those choices. Always be prepared to support your team, fostering an open and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Focus on building strong relationships, as trust is essential for collaboration. Finally, set clear goals and communicate them effectively to ensure everyone is aligned and motivated.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career at leadership level?

The most important piece of advice I’d give to a woman considering a leadership career is to believe in yourself and your abilities. Your voice matters, and your perspective is invaluable. Don’t hesitate to pursue opportunities, even if they feel daunting. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors and peers who uplift you and provide guidance. Remember that it’s okay to ask for help and to lean on others when you need it. Embrace your unique journey, and don’t be afraid to show vulnerability; it can build deeper connections. Above all, stay true to your values and lead with compassion. Your authenticity will inspire others and pave the way for future leaders.

Have there been any role models through your life (work or professional) who have helped shape you as a leader?

My sister has always been a significant role model for me, exemplifying true leadership in both her personal and professional life. I've also had the privilege of working with amazing individuals like Jamie Robertson, Zeev Godik, Cheila Gibbs, Carmen Mallo, David Loewi, and Med Rogers. Each of them has contributed to shaping me into the leader I am today. Their guidance, support, and unique perspectives have been invaluable on my journey, inspiring me to grow and lead with purpose.
