IWD 2025 - an interview with: Hajar Sarhiri

Tell us a little about your career journey leading to where you are now.

My career journey has been an enriching experience in the world of corporate finance. I spent a decade with a French manufacturing company, where I had the opportunity to grow across various finance roles. Eight of those years were based at the company’s headquarters in France, allowing me to develop a strong foundation in financial strategy and corporate operations. I then transitioned to Dubai for two years, gaining valuable exposure to regional finance dynamics. A year ago, I embarked on an exciting new chapter as a Regional Controller with an American company in Dubai, where I oversee finance operations across the Middle East. This role has given me the opportunity to broaden my expertise in regional financial management and contribute to a dynamic, multinational environment.

What does the International Women’s Day slogan “accelerate action” mean for you?

For me, "accelerate action" means moving beyond awareness and actively driving change to achieve gender equality, ensuring that efforts are fast-tracked, and impact is made in real, tangible ways.

How important is it for women to lift each other up and what does that mean to you?

For me, women lifting each other up is not just important—it’s essential. I was fortunate to grow up with a truly inspiring mother who spent her life pursuing her dreams, earning a PhD in Literature and now continuing her journey toward a second PhD in Psychology. Her dedication and resilience have shaped my belief that when women support one another, incredible things happen. Empowerment is not just about personal success; it’s about creating a ripple effect. Whether through mentorship, encouragement, or simply being a voice of support, lifting each other up helps break barriers and paves the way for future generations. When women champion one another, we accelerate progress—not just for ourselves, but for society as a whole.

How important is diversity across senior leadership teams?

Diversity in senior leadership is crucial because it brings a variety of perspectives, drives innovation, and creates a more inclusive environment, ultimately leading to better decision-making and stronger business performance.

Having worked in international environments, I’ve seen firsthand how diverse leadership fosters creativity and resilience. When different voices are heard—whether in terms of gender, nationality, or professional background—organizations become more adaptable and better equipped to navigate today’s complex business landscape. Beyond business performance, diverse leadership also sets the tone for an inclusive workplace, inspiring future generations and ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all. True progress happens when leadership reflects the diverse world we live in.

Senior leadership: 26%, C-suite: 19%, 1 in 4: Chief-level. These are the percentages and numbers of female leaders in our industry. What do these numbers represent to you?

These numbers highlight that while progress has been made, female representation in leadership remains low. It underscores the need for continued efforts to create equal opportunities and ensure more women reach senior and executive positions across industries.

As a successful leader, how do you think (business) leaders can accelerate action toward closing the gender gap and ensuring equal opportunities in the workplace?

Business leaders can accelerate action by setting clear diversity goals, promoting equal opportunities for advancement, addressing unconscious bias, and fostering an inclusive culture that empowers women to thrive and lead. Change won’t happen overnight, but with intentional and sustained effort, we can create workplaces where gender equality is no longer an aspiration but a reality.

Can you share your top tips for entrepreneurial/managerial/leadership success?

Great leadership is about emotional intelligence, empathy, and truly listening to others. Lead by example, be kind, uplift those unheard, and always keep learning.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career at leadership level?

The most important advice I’d give is to always be open to learning and growth while staying true to yourself. Embrace challenges, trust your instincts, and remember that authenticity is a powerful asset in leadership.

Have there been any role models through your life (work or professional) who have helped shape you as a leader?

Yes, my biggest role model has been my mother. She has been an incredible source of inspiration throughout my life, not only for her determination and relentless pursuit of her dreams but also for her leadership qualities. Watching her balance her personal and professional aspirations taught me the importance of perseverance, lifelong learning, and staying true to one’s values. Her example has profoundly shaped the way I approach leadership, with a focus on resilience, empathy, and continuous growth.
