Questions for Cat Johnstone, Founder of Vigour & Vice

What does IWD mean to you?

IWD gives us a moment to reflect on all the fantastic women in our lives, and to appreciate being a woman and all the joy that it brings!

How would you address the cultural issues that form the background of the gender pay gap?

Complete cultural overhaul - invest in an external leadership & change expert to come in and work objectively in realigning the company's values and decision-making processes

How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?

Invest the time in understanding where your strengths and development areas lie. A values inventory and strengths-based work personality assessments will give you a clear picture and vocabulary to articulate your strengths and weaknesses. Being able to speak confidently about your values, skills and plans for growth shows humility, integrity and vision, and will help build confidence and trust within your teams.

Who/what has motivated you to become what you are now?

My inner voice! There have been many times in my life that I felt things were just not quite right. I stopped, stepped back and listened to what my gut was telling me. I've made big decisions, including leaving my career as a lawyer, moving overseas (twice) and confronting unhealthy relationships at work, that weren't easy. But in the long run were absolutely the right thing to do.

Is there a particular leader you look up to?

My first job in London was working for All Bar One in Leicester Square in 2002. I idolised our Operations Director, Vanessa Hall. She delivered some really kick-ass motivational training and leadership sessions that still influence my leadership style today.

Do you sometimes experience resistance when you are leading men?

Yes, but they come around eventually :)
