Questions to Alex Head, Founder & CEO, Social Pantry

To celebrate International Women’s Day & Women’s History Month, Krishnan asked a few questions to Alex Head, Founder & CEO, Social Pantry

What does IWD mean to you?

To me, IWD is about recognising the brilliant we are surrounded by. It a great way to recognise, show support for and uplift other women.

How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?

My best advice is to work hard and lead by example, work for yourself as you expect others to work you. It takes time to develop confidence and the right skills to lead a time.

Understanding that you are not always going to get it right, and that is okay, and that it will take time to develop into a managerial role is important. Strong communication is essential

and again, lead by example and the rest will follow.  Your confidence will grow over time with your experience so be patient!

What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Being a leader is difficult, but being a female leader is even harder! There are many companies that believe in women so seek out companies that offer equal opportunity. My advice to the next generation of female leaders is to remain unified, never give up and be respectful to everyone!

What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership?

  • Great childcare support
  • Great maternity packages
  • No pay gaps
  • Recognize and reward different leadership styles
  • Incentivise women to move up the ladder

Do women in our sector have a hard time getting promoted?

Hospitality is a hard path for anybody, however, if you have the right motivation, passion and drive, you can achieve your goals whoever you are. At Social Pantry, more than 50% of the team are women, and women who cover managerial roles. Therefore, based on Social Pantry I believe that women have the same chance as men in getting promoted within the hospitality sector.

If you could choose one recommendation for HR leaders to help promote women in the workplace, what would it be?

  1. Great mentoring programs for female workers with leadership potential
  2. Great maternity packages

Is there a particular leader you look up to?

Thomasina Miers is a brilliant role model to me: she’s a great chef, a businesswoman and a mother who also finds time for charity…what a hero!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Remember to believe in yourself and in your ability, keep working hard to make that dream a reality.
