IWD 2025 - an interview with Caroline Cartellieri

Tell us a little about your career journey leading to where you are now.

I have been working in digital transformation in the retail and hospitality industries for most of my 30-year career, most recently as Interim Chief Commercial Officer for Edyn Group.  I also have a portfolio of non-Executive roles, both commercial and not-for-profit.

What does the International Women’s Day slogan “accelerate action” mean for you?

According to a study by the World Economic Forum, none of us will see gender parity in our lifetime.  They predict that at the current rate of progress it will take until 2158, to reach full gender parity.  We should not have to wait that long!

How important is it for women to lift each other up and what does that mean to you?

It is not just important for women to lift each other up.  Women should also have male mentors and role models, that help to lift them to the next step of the career ladder.

How important is diversity across senior leadership teams?

It is massively important, because diversity of background (gender, age, ethnicity, etc) brings diversity of thinking.  Without that diversity, boards and leadership teams are at risk of falling prey to group think and missing strategic opportunities or not seeing key risks.

Senior leadership: 26%, C-suite: 19%, 1 in 4: Chief-level. These are the percentages and numbers of female leaders in our industry. What do these numbers represent to you?

There is a long way to go before we reach gender parity.  Hopefully it will not take until 2158!

As a successful leader, how do you think (business) leaders can accelerate action toward closing the gender gap and ensuring equal opportunities in the workplace?

Leaders need to be open minded as to whom they hire and promote.  They also need to provide the framework in which women can thrive, for example by offering shared parental leave, flexible working and other mechanisms that encourage and enable women with children to pursue a career.

Can you share your top tips for entrepreneurial/managerial/leadership success?

Never rule yourself out of anything.  If you are offered a role or promotion, take it.  Don't be afraid to step into bigger shoes.  You'll learn as you go.  Be self confident and not afraid to take a risk.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career at leadership level?

Nobody "starts" a career at a leadership level.  You work your way up.  Dig in, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty, literally.  I vividly remember my days (and nights) at a production line in a chocolate factory, filling boxes ahead of Valentine's Day.
