IWD 2025 - an interview with: Irene Flotman

Tell us a little about your career journey leading to where you are now.

After studying Notarial Law, I worked in the banking sector for a number of years. It was fun but somehow, I was looking for more dynamism and commerce. I found that challenge in the commercial real estate sector. I started working at a real estate consultancy, which was taken over by market leader CBRE after a few years. CBRE is an international real estate advisor in commercial real estate. As Managing Director, I am now ultimately responsible for the advisory part in the Netherlands and also Head of Property Management. I have held various positions, from managing commercial business units to being ultimately responsible for the consultancy branch in the Netherlands. In addition to my job at CBRE, I am a supervisory director at the largest real estate-related trade association, and I have two smaller supervisory directorships.

What does the International Women’s Day slogan “accelerate action” mean for you?

For me, "accelerate action" means that we must not only be aware of gender inequality but also take active steps to reduce it. We need role models in leadership positions who address gender inequality and take targeted actions. It is about accelerating initiatives that promote equality, such as creating awareness, initiating discussions, supporting women in leadership roles, creating inclusive work cultures, and addressing systemic barriers.

How important is it for women to lift each other up and what does that mean to you?

It is crucial for women to support each other. This means that we are proud of each other, encourage each other, mentor each other and offer opportunities. By lifting each other up, we can create a strong network that helps overcome challenges and promote success for all.

How important is diversity across senior leadership teams?

I think diversity in senior leadership teams is essential and a no brainer. I believe in a eco system and not in an ego system. It brings together different perspectives and experiences, leading to better decision-making and innovation. In addition, a diverse leadership team better reflects society and can help attract and retain talent. Society is diverse, so our customers and other stakeholders also have a diverse population. In addition to increasing innovative power, you are a much better discussion partner for your stakeholders. And perhaps most importantly: it's just fun!

Senior leadership: 26%, C-suite: 19%, 1 in 4: Chief-level. These are the percentages and numbers of female leaders in our industry. What do these numbers represent to you?

These figures are quite shocking. They show that there is apparently still a significant gap in gender equality at the leadership level. They emphasize the need for continued efforts to support and promote women in senior positions. It is a call to action to increase these percentages and achieve a more balanced representation.

As a successful leader, how do you think (business) leaders can accelerate action toward closing the gender gap and ensuring equal opportunities in the workplace?

Leaders can accelerate action by implementing policies and practices that promote gender equality, such as flexible work arrangements, mentoring programs, and transparent promotion processes. It's also important to create a culture of inclusion where everyone feels valued and supported. At CBRE, we deliberately changed our governance structure a few years ago, creating space for diverse and balanced decision-making and the opportunity for more people to develop themselves. And we have DE&I ambassadors who make a targeted annual plan with concrete actions.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’d give to a woman thinking of starting a career at leadership level?

Believe in yourself and your abilities. Find mentors and role models who can support and inspire you. Don't be afraid to take risks and make your voice heard.

Have there been any role models through your life (work or professional) who have helped shape you as a leader?

My husband is the example of a powerful and empathetic leader. He is a role model who has brought a culture change to his company by getting rid of a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. I am more than proud of him!
