To celebrate International Women’s Day & Women’s History Month, Krishnan asked a few questions to Debra Ward, Global Transition Director, Barclays - ISS
Debra mentors 4 people – both internal and external to ISS in tech and property
She also supports homeless charities such as WaterAid. and Centre Point where she sponsors a room for a homeless person through an initiative called “Sarah’s Room”!
What does IWD mean to you?
Coming together with people who share a perspective of where we are, how far we have come and a passion, professionalism, and persistence to reach higher.
Why haven't we achieved equality, despite legislation in place regarding pay?
Great actors first learn their lines, next they rehearse, then they act… too many companies are still in the ‘learning their lines’ phase. In other words, many companies aren’t walking the talk… they haven’t engrained diversity and equality into their DNA.
How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?
Be Bold, Be Brilliant, Be Brave…. Be PREPARED
What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Surround yourself with a supportive tribe, seek advocacy, be a student as well as a teacher, never stop investing in yourself, be a life longer learner, take risks!
What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership?
You manage what you monitor…. Actively and consistently review the nine-box grid (or whatever method your org use). Seek out those women who need support and confidence to step forward, raise their hands and step into the unknown. Give them the shot with and then support them with a mentor, coach and/or advocate
Do women in our sector have a hard time getting promoted?
I wouldn’t think so… I think it’s difficult to find women to promote as they often do not make themselves known. I once actively looked for a female global operations director but found it difficult to find someone who had the right skills, experience and attributes. I am sure that such a woman existed but finding her was elusive.
If you could choose one recommendation for HR leaders to help promote women in the workplace, what would it be?
Make sure that the final two candidates have representation from both genders.
Is there a particular leader you look up to?
Michelle Obama. Great work ethic, intelligence, grace & wit… and she’s got moves!
What advice would you give your younger self?
Protect your time, create space for yourself, save room in your life for you
