To celebrate International Women’s Day & Women’s History Month, Krishnan asked a few questions to Susan Powell, Head of Commercial, Barclays - Global Operations – ISS Facility Services
What does IWD mean to you?
A day to celebrate the achievements of all women, what they have accomplished and empowering women to come together and support one another to do more.
Why haven't we achieved equality, despite legislation in place regarding pay?
I believe it is hard to prove and women also want to avoid being seen as ‘difficult’ or ‘moaning’ whereas actually they have every right to question the equality of a process/salary review where they see it necessary
How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?
Put yourself out there, take on additional responsibilities to test yourself and your thinking. Education is important but so is real life experience and you cannot manage through a book alone.
What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Have courage, trust in your opinion and capability and put yourself out there for people to see.
What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership?
I’d like to see more mentoring and coaching programmes. Women are often more than capable but lack the confidence or self-belief and need to find their voice.
Do women in our sector have a hard time getting promoted?
I’ve seen many opportunities in the FM industry for women to be promoted, and I myself have been one of those but I think there is still room for improvement at the senior management level.
If you could choose one recommendation for HR leaders to help promote women in the workplace, what would it be?
Ensure flexibility in the working day, it is evident now that we can work from home, manage our home life and continue to succeed in our work, and I hope this will continue.
How are you paying it forward?
Continue to treat everyone (age, race, gender, socioeconomic status) equally, be there to listen and give advice. Ensure I recognise when someone is really doing a good job and celebrate success.
Is there a particular leader you look up to?
I find my inspiration from people I’ve worked with and know and still look back to my first manager in FM who aspired me to push forward, challenge and develop. 15 years later she is a good friend and still as inspiring as ever, creating a network for business leaders and managing her own business.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Be bold, have courage, take more risks and believe in yourself.
