60 seconds with…Alain Trefois, Director of Operations - Kuramathi – Maldives

How is the general feeling and feedback from your team members and your customers now?

We have re-opened with very low occupancy on 1st of October and we have indeed noticed a frequent increase, slowly but with progress, of occupancy.

Maldives depends obviously of airlines procedures so at all times on the look for better and direct connections. We have been paying all our staff since 1st of October a maximum 60% of their salary with a minimum and maximum scale.

Customers are feeling great while this really is the best time to visit the Maldives especially the natural beauty as always, but safety has been a priority of the resorts and coordinated with the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism.

What market trends are you seeing since re-opening?

As mentioned in my earlier response, Russian and Indian markets have been growing while they at least try to travel to the Maldives without any governmental restrictions and obviously a lot of direct on-line bookings.

What techniques have you used to build sales and re-engage customers?

Having the 1 island/1 resort policy in the Maldives we don’t really have to work a lot on new techniques, just letting future guests know that we are in for business with all the necessary Covid-19 procedures and safety rules in place.

Social media is our main toll to get the word out!!

What advice do you have for anyone who now finds themselves redundant?

Time of reflection and continue looking out while our tourism and hospitality market will get through this.

Opportunities will come back, and I hope for all ages while the last years a lot of experienced managers and general staff between 45 and 60 of age have been considered of being ignored and we now see that we will have to make sure to be more respectful with regards to this aging gap!

My other advice would be to stay active, even without any kind of salary or remuneration, and learn of how to get better in our job and how to get prepared for new challenges in the future.

What positive lessons do we need to learn from what the industry has been through?

I really don’t see any positive note or lesson to be learned except the one that we all depend on each other!

Whatever business you’re in you always have a kind of relation with each other and there we should work on and improve a lot.
