Female Leaders - IWD2022 – Jane Sunley

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, Krishnan interviews Jane Sunley, CEO & Founder - Purple Cubed

What does IWD mean to you?

It’s a critical and important reminder that women remain desperately unequal to men all around the world. However, like Valentine’s Day, I wish we didn’t have to have one because the increased popularity of IWD doesn’t (yet) appear to be commensurate with its effects.

Why haven't we achieved equality, despite legislation in place regarding pay?

It’s easier to close the gender pay gap in less senior roles. At senior level, there are more women in roles that are seen as non-revenue generating, e.g. HR, who are paid less. Yet the head of people is every bit as critical as a head of ops.  My view is that things won’t change until it’s the - better paid - men that are standing up for women’s equal rights.

How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader?

Find a mentor. Work on your confidence and self-belief, learning to examine for feelings around self-doubt and imposter syndrome as early as possible. Know that ‘social’ leadership skills such as empathy are very much in demand and, as a woman, you’re more likely to have these. Finally, take no sh*t!

What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership?

Make sure that people can drive their own progress and career aspirations by investing in the right technology. Give everyone a level playing field and the same opportunities and see those women rise. Tell the success stories.

Is there a particular leader/figure you look up to?

Joanne Monck OBE who came out as a transgender woman aged 58 and overcame adversity to become the successful woman she is today as Head of Global Education and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at The Believe Foundation. An inspiration to all.

What advice will you give to your younger self?

If you want to push the boundaries, your own boundaries will be constantly challenged - learn to deal with it.
