Working with debilitating diseases: the challenges in the workplace

The modern workplace is becoming increasingly aware of the significant challenges faced by employees living with debilitating diseases and long-term health conditions. 

For example, in the UK, almost 3.5 million people are currently living with or after cancer, a number that continues to grow. 

This reality means that about one in three employees will be directly or indirectly impacted by cancer during their career. 

Despite the high prevalence, fear of telling an employer is common among those with cancer , and around four in ten report facing workplace stigma or discrimination

Beyond cancer, a significant of the working-age population report having a long-term health condition, and are classified as disabled. 

This highlights a considerable gap in support, leading to a percentage point gap in employment between disabled and non-disabled individuals and a disability pay gap.
