Female Leaders - IWD2022 – Karen Bosher

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, Krishnan interviews Karen Bosher, Managing Director, GREENE KING: Premium, Urban & Venture Brands

What does IWD mean to you?

I am always inspired by the activity and interest generated by IWD – its particularly important to recognise that the education and rights of women is still off the agenda in some countries globally we all need to ensure the focus remains for those women for whom access to Education remains a challenge.

Why haven't we achieved equality, despite legislation in place regarding pay? 

You need diversity at the top of organisations to ensure the rights and fairness of all employees are protected equally. Until we see more women Chairs and Board members this will probably remain a challenge. Women also need to develop strategies for being demanding of employers on the right pay for the job they do.

How would you advise young women leaders on how to build confidence in their ability as a manager and leader? 

Network with women who have been successful. Find mentors male and female prepared to support you and stay focused on your plan – even when you get setbacks – learn and move on. Find opportunities to succeed and time yourself on your career plan – don’t sit tight and hope to get a promotion. Choose a boss who will support your ambition.

What initiatives should companies invest in to promote women in leadership and an inclusive workplace? 

Look to see that the organisation has an agenda focused on talent targeted for women. Ensure you see that they take the mandate around female leadership seriously – look for women at the top of the organisation.

Is there a particular leader / figure you look up to? 

Gillian Berkman – who I worked with at Mothercare and was Commercial Director had a huge impact on me. She was a total inspiration, took me under her wing and gave me a huge insight in what it meant to create success and live a successful life. She sadly passed away a number of years ago – she was a wonderful and generous leader.

What advice will you give to your younger self? 

Don’t wait for permission – you are good enough, be brave and believe in your ability to achieve amazing things…you deserve to have it all!
