“What’s the market doing…?”

I get asked that question a lot at the moment! It can change daily / weekly but there are some trends that we are seeing across several businesses:

Right-sizing – Companies are looking at their teams and positions and cutting their cloth accordingly. Some of this was overdue and some brought on by the pandemic

Diversification of Revenue Streams – Digital, e-comms, New services, Delivery, Franchise, International Growth – candidates who can bring solutions to businesses are very much in demand

High potential, adaptive individuals – a lot of the clients we speak to have had to (or will have to) change their business models pretty dramatically. Initially everyone hoped this was going to be 6 months. I heard one industry expert talk last week about 2024… There are going to be plenty more developments to keep us all entertained.

Multi-skilled – especially at executive level. We have seen an increase in hybrid roles. There was a strong trend towards this in 2019 where we placed several candidates who could look after multiple functions. As an example: Operations, HR and Training or a COO looking after operations, technology and support chain or a Commercial Director looking after sales, marketing, ecommerce and growth. Smaller management teams with less hierarchy and politics who are more efficient and a closer team.

Below are some examples of candidates who are high potential and multi skilled:

Chief Information Officer / FM and Retail

  • Leader in IT change management for 20 years across multiple B2C sectors
  • Director across EU and Asia responsible for 600+ staff and TO of £550 million
  • Oversaw acquisition of global company with over 2000 staff. Restructured and rebranded business

Managing Director, London/Bristol

  • Business leadership experience encompassing diverse disciplines of strategy, finance, sustainability, and sales. Lead businesses with turnovers up to £100m
  • Proven track record of over-achievement of commercial and operational targets.
  • Vision for target-setting in triple bottom line, growth, efficiency, sustainability, job satisfaction, team building. Particular passion for sustainability

Chief Marketing Officer / Commercial Director

  • 20 years blue chip FMCG and retail marketing experience, with a strong track record for delivering brand led growth 
  • Creative, dynamic and authentic leader.
  • Experience with brand partnerships, activation, consumer insight and team building

Operations Director / COO

  • Extensive sales, operation and people management experience.
  • Experience in business with 75 plus sites (growing yearly as per below), with a turnover of £40m net, delivering +20% ROI, with 1000+ employees.
  • Executed a £10m Capex budget, leading to the roll out of a further 22 new sites conversions in 3 years, each based against a 100% successfully delivered 3-year budgeted ROI.
  • Experience with sales strategy, operations and site development
